How To Clean A  Sink

clean sink

What you will need:

  • Paper towels or old cloth.

  • Spray bottle with white vinegar or your preferred household cleaner. *

  • Rubber gloves

Method:

  • Remove all objects from and around the sink such as toothbrushes, soaps etc.

  • Spray white vinegar or spray cleaner all over the sink, bench top & taps. If your sink has caked on toothpaste etc., you may need to let the vinegar sit for 5-10 minutes.

  • Wipe off with paper towels or old cloth.

  • If you have mould build up around the taps, you may have to squirt some bleach onto the mould, leave for 30 minutes and wipe off.

Note: If cleaning your sink with chemicals, be sure to open windows before commencing.

Stainless steel kitchen sinks:

I find the best method to clean stainless steel sinks is to use a cream cleanser and an old green scourer. This helps to remove food scraps from the sink.

  • Pour a dash of cream cleanser into the sink, with a damp scourer, work the cleanser around the entire sink, using a bit of elbow grease to remove dirt & food debris.

  • With a cloth or sponge, wipe away residue.

  • Spray with white vinegar, and rub all over with an old cloth for a wonderful shine.

Disinfecting kitchen sinks:

Kitchen sinks are one of the dirtiest places in the house, they are literally teeming with bacteria. It is essential you disinfect your sink once or twice a week. To do so;

  • Add 1 tablespoon of bleach and 1 litre of water to a spray bottle (if your bottle is smaller, halve the quantities).

  • Spray all over the sink and taps. Leave for 5 minutes.

  • Wipe off with a kitchen towel.

  • Pour half a cup of bleach down the drain.

* White vinegar is an effective antibacterial cleaning agent without the harsh chemicals found in commercial cleaners. It is better for the environment & a fraction of the cost.

White vinegar should not be used on natural stone surfaces such as granite. You should be able to purchase cleaners specifically for these surfaces.
