Cleaning
Grout
Grout needs regular maintenance or it will quickly discolour. In
bathrooms, this is usually caused by a build up
of soap & mould. In kitchens oils & fats & on
flooring, dirt.
There are
many grout cleaning products available at your
local supermarket or hardware store. These
usually work very well, or you can make up your
own grout cleaner and save some money.
When using a
commercial grout cleaner, always follow the
manufacturers instructions. Remember, when using
chemicals, do so in a well ventilated room.
What you will need:
Grout cleaner 1:
-
Add to a
spray bottle a mixture of 50% white vinegar
& 50% hot water.
-
Spray on
to grout & leave for 15-10 minutes.
-
Scrub off
with toothbrush/scourer and hot water.
Grout cleaner 2:
-
Make a
mix of bicarbonate of soda & water. Stir
into a paste.
-
Apply to
grout & leave for 15-10 minutes.
-
Scrub off
with a toothbrush/scourer and hot water.
Bleach:
For really
hard to shift stains, pour bleach onto a sponge
& wipe over the grout. Leave for 5 minutes &
scrub off. Be careful using this method on
coloured grout, always test on a small area
first.
Bleach & bicarbonate of soda:
Make up a
paste of bleach & bicarbonate of soda. Apply to
grout, leave for 5 minutes & wash off.
Sealing grout:
Grout should
be sealed periodically to prevent dirt & debris
getting into cracks in the grouting.
