How To Get
Rid Of Freckles
Also
known as an
ephelis,
freckles are multiple, flat, small, brown spots
caused by exposure to the sun. They are most
visible in fair skinned people. They are most
often found on the face although they can occur
on any part of the body that is exposed to the
sun. Freckles are more common in children, and
tend to fade in adulthood.
How to prevent freckles:
Prevention is
always the best way. Apply sun screen that
blocks both UVA & UVB rays.
Always wear a
wide rimmed hat when out in the sun.
Try to stay
out of the sun during the hottest part of the
day; between 10.00am - 2.00pm.
How to get rid of freckles:
There are
many natural methods that may be tried to reduce
the appearance of freckles. These include lemon
juice, vitamin C serum & sour milk among to name
a few.
Bleaching
creams - The most common method of freckle
removal is bleaching creams. These usually
contain
hydroquinone. Bleaching creams may be purchased
from your chemist. Stronger ones are available
by prescription.
Chemical
peels - Also known as
chemexfoliation or
derma-peeling, chemical peels remove the
damaged, outer layer of the skin. The skin
regenerates itself with new layers. There are
several kinds of chemical peel, superficial,
medium depth and deep (phenol) chemical peels.
Chemical peels are performed by a dermatologist.
You may need one treatment or several
treatments, depending on the kind of peel you
require.
Laser
removal - This is the most effective method
of freckle removal. There are two lasers
available for freckle removal. The area to be
treated is numbed with a topical anaesthetic
first. The laser projects an intense light which
is absorbed by the melanin, causing destruction
of the pigment particles. One or two sessions
will be required. A dermatologist will be able
to perform laser removal.
Retin-A
- A derivative of vitamin A, Retin A is a cream
applied topically that can be effective in
removing freckles. It works by increasing skin
cell turnover but can produce irritation and
flaking in some individuals.
Once freckles
have been removed, you will need to protect your
skin to prevent them returning.
