Glossitis
What is glossitis?
Glossitis is
an inflammation of the tongue causing it to
swell & develop a darkened "beefy" red colour.
It may be a primary disease or secondary (a
symptom of systemic disease). There are many
causes of glossitis including;

Allergic
reaction - Toothpaste, mouthwash etc.

Burns
- Hot food and drinks etc.
-
Viral,
fungal or bacterial infection - Herpes
simplex, Epstein Barr,
thrush,
scarlet fever.

Nutritional deficiency
- Vitamin B12,
anemia, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin.
-
Injury
- Braces, dentures, piercings etc.
-
Irritants
- Alcohol, tobacco, spicy foods etc.
-
Certain
medications.
-
HIV -
Resulting in opportunistic infection.
-
Tumour.
-
Idiopathic - No known cause.
Glossitis symptoms:
Swollen,
painful, dark red tongue which has a smooth
appearance. Swelling may be mild to severe.
If severe,
difficulty swallowing & breathing may also
occur, which will require immediate medical
attention.
Glossitis treatment:
Treatment of
glossitis depends on the underlying cause and
may include;

Treating
any underlying diseases.

Avoiding
irritants alcohol, tobacco, switching
toothpaste etc.

Antifungals to treat thrush.
-
Antibiotics to treat bacterial infection.
-
Antiviral
to treat viral infection.
-
Treating
nutritional deficiencies.
-
Corticosteroids to reduce inflammation.
-
Avoid hot
liquids such as tea & coffee while the
tongue recovers, or at least don't drink
while piping hot.
