Hangnails

What is a hangnail?
A hangnail is
a torn, jagged piece of dry skin that is found
along the side of the nail. Although not
medically serious, it is a painful condition.
Hangnails predominantly affect the nails of the
fingers but can sometimes occur on the toes too.
Despite the name, hangnails aren't a part of the
actual nail.
What causes hangnails?
Hangnails are
caused by dry skin separating from the cuticle.
They are more prevalent in winter & nail biters
are more prone to developing hangnails. Do not
pick at hangnails, this can lead to infection
and more pain.
Hangnail treatment:
To relieve
discomfort, snip the hangnail as short as
possible with a pair of sharp nail scissors.
This will help avoid snagging it on clothing
etc. You may wish to soak your hand in warm
water for a few minutes prior to snipping off
the hangnail to soften it up.
Hangnail prevention:
Keep nails
well moisturised, especially in the cooler
months.
Avoid biting
your nails.
