How To Get Rid Of Ants In The Home & Garden
Overview:
Ants can
be a frustrating problem to get rid of. Just as
you think you have combated the problem more
ants show up.
Natural methods:
The first
thing you need to do is ensure no food is left
around for ants to feast on.
If you can
find the ant nest all the better. You can kill
them at the source. Look under any large stones
or logs lying around.
If you
know where the nest is, pour in boiling
water.
If you
know where they are coming in, sprinkle the
entrance with talcum powder.
Powdered cinnamon is also reported to deter
ants. Sprinkle any entry points.
Scatter mint leaves or peppermint oil around
areas you find ants, they don't like the
smell.
Mix 2
cups of sugar with 2 tablespoons of borax
powder & 1 cup of boiling water.
You
can also sprinkle borax around the ants
nest.
Please note;
Borax is toxic to both humans & pets if
swallowed, so care must be taken when using this
product.
Chemicals:
There are
commercially available products you can purchase
to deal with ant infestations but these should
be used with caution around children & pets.
Ants in pet's food bowls:
-
Don't
leave fresh food out for long. Not only will
the ants get at it but it will go off fairly
quickly. Dry food is fine to leave out, and
it shouldn't attract ants.
-
Place
a large dish underneath the bowl & fill with
water.
-
You
can also buy pet bowls which are specially
designed to deter ants. They have a little
moat like trough around the edge which
you fill with water.
