Mosquito
Bites
Preventing mosquito bites:
Avoidance is the best measure
when it comes to dealing with mosquitos. They
are more than an annoyance, they are also
capable of transmitting disease such as Ross
River Fever.
Ways to
reduce mosquitos include;
-
Eliminate standing water in
the area such as children's pools, water
standing in plant pot trays, buckets
etc.
-
Wear
loose fitting clothes that cover most of you
(ie; long sleeves & pants).
-
Install
an electric mosquito zapper.
-
Wear
insect repellant. If using on children, make
sure it is okay to use.
-
Burn
mosquito repelling coils or candles when
sitting outside. Mosquitos are most active
from dusk onwards.
Treating mosquito bites:
Below are some methods that can
help to reduce the itchiness of a mosquito bite.
They can be used individually, or together if
necessary.
-
Don't scratch the bite which
will lead to further irritation & break the
skin, possibly leading to infection.
-
Apply ice
to the area. This will help with the itching
& reduce swelling.
-
Apply
calamine lotion to the area.
-
Rub soap
directly onto the bite.
-
There are
a multitude of over the counter topical or
oral antihistamine products to treat
mosquito bites. Oral antihistamine may cause
drowsiness.
