Nappy Rash

nappy rash

What is nappy rash?

Also known as "diaper rash or diaper dermatitis", nappy rash is a common problem in babies and toddlers caused by an inflammation of the skin in the nappy area. It results from the skin coming into contact with urine and feces, which causes the skin to become irritated & inflamed.

Nappy rash occurs when the baby has been left in a dirty nappy for too long, however some babies are more susceptible to nappy rash than others and will develop a rash despite diligence from the parents.

Nappy rash causes:

As has already been outlined, the main cause is irritation to the skin caused by contact with urine and feces.

Aggravating factors may include washing powder residue (on reusable nappies), plastic nappy covers, sickness (cold, upset stomach, fungal infection etc), certain medications,

What are the symptoms of nappy rash?

  • Redness and inflammation in the nappy area.

Nappy rash treatment:

  • Increase the frequency of nappy changes.

  • Use fragrance and alcohol free wipes, these are less irritating to the skin. Better still, use warm water and a soft cloth/cotton wool to clean the area. If this doesn't work, try a little sorbolene cream. Pat the skin dry, avoid rubbing.

  • Use a barrier cream containing zinc on the nappy area.

  • Make sure your baby is thoroughly dry before putting on a new nappy.

  • Give your baby plenty of nappy free time to let the skin breathe.

Many parents also use baby power during a nappy change but there are many who believe it comes with risks from inhalation. If you must use a powder, it is recommended you use cornstarch instead.

If the problem doesn't clear up, or the skin appears extremely inflamed &/or infected, is broken or weeping or your child has a fever, seek medical advice from your doctor.
