Tinea Versicolour

Overview:

Also known as pityriasis versicolor, tinea versicolour is a common fungal infection of the skin characterised by discoloured patches of skin on the torso. Tinea versicolour is caused by a yeast of the genus Malassezi. These fungi are found on healthy skin in small numbers, however in some people, the fungus begins to overgrow, leading to patches of discoloured skin.

It is most commonly seen in teenagers or young adults, when the sebaceous glands are at their most active. It is also more common in hot/humid climates and in people who sweat heavily.

Tinea versicolour isn't contagious, it is commonly found on the skin, causing no problem.

Symptoms of tinea versicolour:

  • Small, scaly, discoloured patches on the skin. The colour of the patches may vary from red to brown to white. Sun exposure can make the patches more apparent as the affected patches do not tan. Small patches may merge into adjoining patches.
  • Areas of the body are typically affected such as the trunk, neck & arms.
  • There is sometimes mild itching.

Treatment of tinea versicolour:

Tinea versicolour is usually easy to treat with either topical or oral anti fungal medications.

  • Over the counter anti-fungal shampoos, creams & ointments can be used for mild cases.
  • Selsun Blue shampoo is another treatment. This is applied once a day & left on for 10 minutes, and then rinsed off. Repeat daily for 7 days.
  • Severe or recurrent cases may be treated with oral anti-fungal medications.

It will take several months for the skin to return to normal.
