Cleaning A Toilet

clean toilet

What you will need:

  • Rubber gloves.
  • Toilet cleaner (bleach, Toilet Duck etc.).
  • Bucket with warm, soapy water.
  • Toilet brush.
  • Spray bottle with white vinegar or other disinfectant spray cleaner.
  • Paper towels.

How to clean your toilet:

Toilets should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected at least once a week.

  • Open the window, you do not want to be inhaling strong fumes.
  • Remove everything surrounding the toilet such as mats. If you have anything on the cistern, remove.
  • Apply your chosen toilet cleaner to the bowl, making sure you get it under the rim. Close the lid and wait for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, spray the outside of the toilet, including the lid, seat,  cistern and  bowl with your disinfectant spray cleaner. Starting from the top, wipe down the entire toilet to remove the dirt and spray residue.
  • After 30 minutes, open the lid & scrub the inside of the bowl with a toilet brush to remove any hard to shift stains.
  • Spray a little vinegar or spray cleaner around the rim of the underside of the seat, wipe clean.
  • Flush the toilet. Sprinkle a few drops of your favourite essential oil into the toilet. Peppermint, lavender & citrus are good ones to use.
  • Spray disinfectant onto the tiles around the toilet, wipe clean with paper towel. Lay down a fresh toilet mat.
  • Spray light switch, door handle. Wipe down.

Natural toilet cleaners:

If you would prefer to avoid using harsh chemicals in your toilet, try the following recipes;

  • Mix 2 parts borax with 1 part lemon juice. Sprinkle in toilet, leave for a few minutes to loosen dirt & then scrub.
  • Just before you go to bed, put one Steradent tablet into the bowl, leave overnight & flush in the morning.
  • Apparently Coca Cola is an effective toilet cleaner. Pour a can around the sides of the toilet bowl (on the inside obviously), let it sit for 1-2 hours, clean as usual, using a toilet brush. The stains should rub away easily.
