Tonsil Stones
The tonsils are two glands found at the back of
the throat. They are part of our immune system,
making antibodies and white blood cells which
help protect us from infection.
Tonsil stones (also known as tonsilloliths) are
a common condition characterised by small,
hard, foul smelling, yellow stones located within the deep
crypts of the tonsils. Food particles, bacteria,
oral debris and white blood cells become trapped
in the crypts, hardening & calcifying over time.
While they may be a nuisance, they are generally
harmless. People who have had repeated bouts of
tonsillitis are at greater risk of developing
tonsil stones due to scarring and pitting left
on the tonsils. It is most common in adolescents
and teenagers.
Symptoms of tonsil stones:
In many cases, tonsil stones are small & go
unnoticed. Larger ones may have the following
symptoms;
-
White to
yellow calcified masses on the tonsils.
Their size ranges from a grain of sand to
several mm.
-
Enlarged and
inflamed tonsils.
-
Bad breath.
-
Feeling of
something being stuck in the back of the
throat.
-
Sore throat.
-
Discomfort
swallowing.
-
Metallic taste
in the mouth.
Treatment for tonsil stones:
In many cases, stones will come off and either
be swallowed or spat out. Stones that aren’t
causing any discomfort may be left alone. Tonsil
stones that are causing problems may be treated
the following methods;
-
Dislodging the
stones at home with a jet of water,
toothbrush, cotton bud etc.
-
Using suction
to pull the stone off the tonsil with a
curved medicine dropper.
-
Gargling with
salt water. This may need to be repeated
several times before the stone dislodges.
-
Resurfacing of
the tonsil by laser can help smooth them &
avoid future outbreaks of stones.
-
See your GP.
They may be able to remove the stones in
their office using a curette.
-
Surgical
removal of the stones.
-
Practice good
oral hygiene.
