Whiteheads

Blackheads and whiteheads are known as comedones.
Blackheads are known as ‘open comedones’ and
whiteheads ‘closed comedones’. Whiteheads are
caused by a blockage in the sebaceous gland.
They occur as a result of a build up of sebum
(an oily secretion produced by the sebaceous
glands) & sloughed off skin cells. This forms a
solid plug. The surrounding area may become
inflamed, causing redness & swelling.
Teenagers are most commonly affected by pimples,
acne & whiteheads although they can affect
adults too. Diet and hormones play a role, which
is why pimples are often seen in teenagers,
people with a poor diet & outbreaks occur at
certain times of a woman's menstrual cycle.
Treating and preventing whiteheads:
The occasional whitehead is more of a nuisance
than anything else & will go away on it’s own in
time. Persistent or severe cases should be seen
by a dermatologist who will be able to advise on
the best treatment for your situation. Below are
some methods to help prevent & avoid whiteheads.
-
Wash your face with a mild cleanser at least
twice a day.
-
Use a mild exfoliator once a week.
-
Eat a good diet containing plenty of fresh
fruit & vegetables and drink plenty of
water.
-
Avoid use oil based cosmetics or
moisturizer.
-
Always remove make up before going to bed.
-
There are a variety of products available
from your chemist to treat whiteheads &
pimples. These may contain Retin-A or Benzyl
Peroxide which are both active ingredients
that are found in pimple treatments.
-
Never squeeze a whitehead. This can cause
scarring & push the build up deeper & also
introduce dirt & bacteria from your hands,
leading to infection. If you do have a
whitehead you need treated, see your doctor
or dermatologist.
